Mountain Biking
The camp is situated on a working farm and all roads are accessible with a mountain bike. There are also some great dedicated single tracks in the area less than 10 km from the farm at Grootvadersbosch.
Hiking / Walking
There are some amazing roads that will take you through picturesque “kloofs” so feel free to take your backpack and some water and go and explore the farm and the local wildlife…
Fishing
There are a number of farm dams stocked with bass and tilapia. Heidelberg also has a number of excellent venues for the more experienced fishermen and arrangements can be made to do a half day float tube excursion to one of the dams in the area.
Don’t forget that the Breede River, a fishing paradise and arguably the best place to target big 100lb kabeljou, is only 40km from the camp.
Food/Dining
Less than a kilometre from the camp you can find Die Skeerhok farmstall and Hooikraal butchery. They have a unique feel and some interesting dishes that will whet your appetite. Die Skeerhok is a great place to go for a breakfast or lunch and Hooikraal butchery will have everything you need for a braai in the evening back at the camp. Don’t forget to take kids along to feed the number of farm animals they have.
Water
The water is perfectly safe to drink if you want but if you have a sensitive stomach please bring drinking water with. Please use water sparingly.
Hot Water
Water can be boiled in the kettle provided. Mix cold and hot water in the bucket and pour into the shower bag. Hoist up and open the tap. Enjoy!
Swimming
There are several farm dams in the area. Swimming in the farm dam just below the Hooikraal Tented Camp is allowed and encouraged.
Good To Know
There are numerous thorn trees in and around the camp and while we are doing our outmost to try and pick up all the fallen branches it is not possible to get to all the thorns. Please make sure to wear your shoes at all times and bring a ground sheet to put under the tent.
Please remember to bring cool boxes with to keep food that spoil quickly. The solar systems in the tents do not allow the use of a fridge or freezer.
